What this is

· The studio

New Horizons Developments is a game about running a UK housebuilder: buying land, choosing what goes on it, picking the firms who do the work, and pricing finished houses into a market that does not care what you paid.

It is in beta. This is where I will write down how the parts of it work, and — more usefully — why they work that way rather than the obvious way.

Most of the interesting decisions in a game like this are invisible once they are made. The defect rate on a cheap builder is one number in a table, but choosing to have defect rates at all decided what the game is about. A buyer who walks away from an overpriced house instead of haggling makes the price matter in a way a negotiation screen never would, and it does it without asking anyone to tap through a negotiation on a phone.

Those are the things worth writing down, so that is what this will mostly be. Occasional rather than regular.

If you want to try the beta, get in touch.
